Our take
Home versions of the software Reading Horizons sells to schools. Children learn the 42 sounds, then blends and digraphs, long, short and r-controlled vowels and diphthongs, then two rules for dividing longer words. Lessons include dictation, and short checks confirm a skill before moving on. Discovery is for ages 4–9 and Elevate for 10 to adult. The software does not listen to your child read.
A good fit for
- Older children, teens and adults who need to start from the sounds
- Families who want self-running software with a clear sequence
Look elsewhere if
- Children who need someone to hear them read
